Renovation, retrofit and modern upgrades

The Chinese Canadian Museum, located in the historic Wing Sang Building, is Canada’s first museum dedicated to Chinese Canadian history. As a designated heritage site, it is undergoing a major transformation led by Terris & Company General Contractors Ltd. While remaining open to the public, the museum is receiving substantial seismic, structural, mechanical, and electrical upgrades. These include accessibility improvements under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) program. The project focuses on modernizing over 21,000 square feet of space to exceed current building code safety requirements and meet Class B gallery-grade specifications, all while preserving key heritage materials and design elements that speak to the building’s storied past. This complex project is as much a heritage restoration as it is a modernization. Upgrades include the structural reconstruction of the rooftop garden, comprehensive updates to the building’s electrical and HVAC systems, and the installation of a custom-designed lighting system that brings both functionality and ambiance to gallery spaces. Additional improvements include the renovation of all galleries, the creation of a new street-level retail area, the addition of a dedicated education centre and lunchroom, an updated reception area, and new public accessible washrooms. Once complete, this revitalized space — encompassing the historic Wing Sang Building and the former Bob Rennie Space — will offer bright, contemporary interiors that support cultural learning, public engagement, and immersive visitor experiences, while honouring the building’s rich architectural legacy.
