Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize Nominee
The Union is a house lift, restoration, renovation and addition project of a 100 + year old heritage home located in Strathcona, Vancouver. The project includes an in-fill duplex and studio which transformed the site from a single-family use dwelling into a 5-unit development. The heritage home exterior has been meticulously restored to its original period while the interior has been completely renovated to reflect the owner’s artfulness, with the addition to the heritage building becoming a nod to the exterior elements at the infill building. The project is a wonderful synthesis of historical and contemporary architectural typologies inspired by the eclecticism of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Five-unit stratified development.
One magical mechanical room with stratified common boiler serving all units.
Four-story custom steel stairs templated and assembled on-site, prefabricated off-site.
Two unsupported exterior steel canopies.
Custom turned veranda columns, bracket scrollwork, finials, gable end treatments, and powder coated downspouts and gutters.
